“Some weather we’re having today!” Weather is always the small talk fallback, but when you’re moving to a new country with a climate you’re not familiar with…the weather is actually a BIG deal!
I speak with people from all corners of the world who are interested in coming to Prague to get TEFL certified and teach English. “What’s the weather like in Prague?” is one of the most common questions I hear, and with good reason, right? We want to know what it’s like at the place we’re relocating to and how to pack for this big adventure! If you want some practical and straightforward advice about the weather and climate in Prague and what to pack for the seasons, read on!
The climate in the Czech Republic has four distinct seasons.
Summer
Prague typically has hot and sunny summers (average of 80-85 degrees F or 29 degrees C) with some extreme humidity on occasion. Since air conditioning is not always to be expected in most restaurants, apartments, or businesses, bring light, breathable clothes to help you stay the most comfortable in the heat. A light sweater is suggested for cool evenings or if you go paddle-boating on the river!
Winter
Winters are cold with temperatures averaging around 28-32 degrees F or -2 – 0 degrees C, so layer up! Pack your winter coat, hat, and scarf and warm, comfortable shoes or boots are also recommended. While it typically is on the colder side as far as temperature, it is unusual to see much snow in Prague. The snow is more common in the countryside and especially in the mountains. But when it does snow in Prague, the fairytale atmosphere is undeniable with the snow-covered roofs and cobblestone streets. Especially around the holidays, it’s especially scenic. Everyone loves Christmas in Prague.
Spring
In spring, the temperatures start to increase, but the weather can vary a lot; one day could be rainy and windy and the next day it could be pleasant and sunny. We often say “If you don’t like the weather right now, just wait 5 minutes and it will change”. Having clothes which are easy to layer is best recommended for the volatile weather of spring.
Autumn
Autumn is especially nice with cool and crisp morning air followed by warm and sunny afternoons. Plus the changing colors of the leaves on the trees… it’s easy to see why the autumn season is many people’s favorite time of year! Long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and a coat/jacket are recommended.
For your teaching practice and interviews in particular, we highly recommend bringing items which are business smart/casual: button-up shirts or a blazer always add a polished look.
When deciding what to pack, we suggest items which are easy to layer. This adds versatility to your wardrobe and you’ll have plenty to choose from for any season! And if you find you’re missing something, you could always do a little shopping at one of the many shopping centers throughout the city.
